Italy in 2050: Population Projections, Town by Town

Who will grow and who will empty out by 2050: the population projections of Italian municipalities in a 3D map and in rankings by growth and decline.

What will Italy look like in 2050? Demographic projections, built on births, deaths and migration, sketch a smaller, older country — but with opposite trajectories from town to town. While some areas keep growing, thousands of municipalities will lose a sizeable share of their inhabitants.

Projections are not destiny: they are a "no-policy-change" scenario meant to show where intervention is needed. But the underlying direction is clear.

Who will empty out most

At the opposite end, the towns with the most severe projected decline: small inland centres where the elderly already dominate and the young cohorts needed for renewal are missing.
